The search for Brackston businessman Adrian Wentworth has been called off after a body found on the North Yorkshire moors was formally identified as Mr Wentworth.

The local businessman had been missing for five days prior to the body being discovered by ramblers. His car was found the day after he disappeared, over four miles away from where his body was found. The police have yet to issue a formal statement about the circumstance surrounding Mr Wentworth’s death.

My eyes mist over as I read it again and again. I glance at the date – 29 November 1979 – and think of how cold it would have been on the moors at that time of the year. Five days in the wind and rain and plunging temperatures. The moors can be brutal in midsummer, let alone the dark nights of winter.

I nibble at my lip, tugging at loose pieces of skin. Why was he there? Was he a walker and simply lost his way in the fog?

Flicking back, I look for stories leading up to it. Five days prior. That’s all I need to look for. Just five days.

It doesn’t take long to locate it. According to the local newspaper, Adrian Wentworth left his home on the morning of Saturday 24 November 1979, telling his wife he was going to town to buy himself a new coat. She reported him missing later that evening when he failed to return home. Next to the story is a small, grainy picture of a man I guess is probably in his late forties. He’s wearing glasses and a reserved, forced smile.

I stop and think things through. There’s nothing mentioned about his personal life. Like all newspaper stories, it only states the facts regarding his disappearance. I can’t work out whether it was an accident or whether he had no intention of ever returning home. And if he didn’t want to return home, why not? More frustration grips me. What in God’s name went on in that house?

I spend the next hour going through each and every page, searching for more stories about him, looking for information on this poor man who left his home, never to return. There doesn’t seem to be anything of relevance until a thought crashes into my head, almost knocking me off kilter. How did I not think of it before? I quickly leaf through the classified section of the paper and focus on the columns listing the deaths for each day. It appears nearly two weeks after the newspaper reports stating his body had been found. I read it through, trying piece it all together in my mind.

Wentworth, Adrian Peter
